What should I do when I'm moving out of a property?

You must let your supplier know if you are changing premises, preferably at least 30 days before you move, so there is time for your change of tenancy to be processed. This will ensure that you receive a correct closing bill, dated up to when you leave the premises, so that you are not incorrectly charged for the energy used after you leave. A submitted meter reading taken when you leave the premises will also help with this, if you are responsible for taking readings manually.

When reaching out to your energy supplier, they are likely to request the following information:

  • Details of the property such as address, moving in/out date and supply numbers.
  • A lease to show you have moved in or a lease surrender to show you have moved out. (For new owners, suppliers may request a copy of the land registry, title deeds, a TR1 form or sales agreement).
  • Business rates or insurance documents if you are operating a new business at the premises.
  • Meter readings (if these are not taken automatically).
  • Some suppliers may also ask for forms of ID, proof of address, pictures of the premises and food hygiene certificates, if applicable.

Can tenants switch suppliers?

Yes, if you are a new tenant or owner that is responsible for your own energy bills, you can get in touch with us to set up a contract with your desired supplier. You are not obligated to stay with the property’s current energy supplier and we will deal with all pesky paperwork for your change of tenancy. If your landlord is responsible for your property’s energy contracts, they will follow a similar process, providing they are not already in contract at the property.

Do I have to pay any charges to my supplier when changing tenancies?

Most people are cautious of early exit fees when they are in a fixed contract, but this is rarely applicable when it comes to change of tenancies. Whether you are in a fixed or variable contract, your supplier should allow you to exit the contract with no fees if you are leaving the premises, as long as the COT process is followed and evidence of the move is provided.
